What is recorded when you visit
- Which pages you open, and when.
- The page you came from (the referring site's address), and any campaign tags in the link you followed.
- Your town, region and country as reported by the network the site sits behind. Not a street address, not a postal code, not a map position.
- Whether you are on a phone, a tablet or a computer.
- A random visitor number in a cookie on your device, so your page opens count as one visit rather than many.
- A one-way code made from the address your connection came from, so repeat visits can be counted and abuse spotted. The address itself is not kept, and the code is cleared after 90 days.
Nothing else: no mouse tracking, no typing, no form contents, and nothing shared with or asked of any outside company. There is no third-party analytics script on this site.
How long
Visit records are kept for 12 months. The one-way code of the connection address is cleared from them after 90 days.
Choosing not to be recorded
Press this and your page opens are counted only as a number with nothing attached to them: no cookie, no visitor number, no town.
If you change your mind:
When you send a message
Your name, how to reach you, and your message are stored so James can answer. The text of every message, yours and his, is encrypted on the server. The record also notes how you first reached the site (the referring page, campaign tags, and town), so James knows where his enquiries come from.
If you make an account
Your name, email address and a scrambled form of your password (the password itself is never stored) are kept so you can sign in and see your conversations in one place. Messages are kept as above.
The site emails you only what you asked for: James's reply to your message, an update on a litter you follow, or a link to set a new password. Replying to one of those emails lands on your conversation with James, not in a mailbox.
To see or remove what is held about you
Signed in, open Your account and then Your data: Download my data gives you everything held about you in one file, and Delete my account removes it. Or message James through the contact page and ask. Deleted records are gone for good after 30 days. The what-we-keep page lists it all in plain words.
